In the bustling heart of Kal, there is one night each year where the markets close and all trade comes to a temporary halt. During this night, Faians from across the Realm flock to the city of Sowara to attend the most luxurious celebration Faia has to offer… The Nebula Gala!

Like many traditions, the Nebula Gala had humble beginnings. It was originally a boring end-of-year meeting held exclusively among the High Magnates of the Merchant’s Guild. They would gather to discuss their plans moving into the next year, as well as bicker over various prices and contracts. However, as Sowara grew into a cultural hub rather than just a place for commerce, the Merchant’s Guild realized that this meeting was a missed opportunity. For if Sowara was to be the vibrant commercial capital of the Realm, its Guild needed a celebration to match! A grand spectacle to celebrate trade, prestige, and most importantly, the hard work of every artisan and merchant whose efforts made Sowara thrive in the first place!

With newfound determination, the Merchant’s Guild dug deep into their treasuries to transform their headquarters into what is known today as the Grand Exchange. The building is a marvel of Sowaran architecture, with cylindrical towers made of white marble and crystal reaching high into the clouds. Throughout the year, the Exchange serves as the Realm’s primary trade and meeting hub. However, the interior was very much built with the Gala in mind, featuring magnificent balconies and enchanted stairwells that float around, designed to allow massive crowds to mingle seamlessly.

While Faians were initially skeptical of the Nebula Gala and the Merchant’s Guild’s claims that it would blend business, pleasure, and philanthropy all together, the Guild delivered on their promises and made an even larger name for itself through this success. On the night of the Gala, the entire ceiling of the Grand Exchange turns a rich midnight blue, dotted with twinkling stars and, of course, nebulas. The original meeting among the High Magnates lives on, but it has now been expanded to an entire trade floor where merchants of all ranks can gather to network over glasses of sparkling juices and delicate tarts distributed on star-shaped platters. Meanwhile, on the ballroom floors above, live orchestras play local Kalean music while guests dance the night away, occasionally drifting off to sample a treat or two. When the clock strikes midnight, the Auctions begin, and various artifacts, elixirs, and creations of the Iron Crucible are silently bid upon throughout the night.

All of this extravagancy isn’t for nothing, either. The Nebula Gala is the Realm’s largest fundraiser, supporting the Lightkeeper Council itself! Every wisp spent on tickets, treats, and the auction is directly donated to the Council, helping them forward the Lightkeeper Cause and keep all of Faia safe from the dark grasp of the Wither. And for one very special night, the prosperity of the Merchant’s Guild and generosity imbued in the Lightkeepers dance under the same nebulous sky.
