The stars were beginning to rise.
The sea are still glistening with flocks of floating lanterns by the surface, while the beach was all alive with chatter, laughter, stories, and songs, as many Faians gather to celebrate the peak of the rite.
And just up in the hill that overlooks the sea, Mirae watched from afar, curled into a puff of pink mist that again, made her looked like a cotton candy. Her wings are all tucked under her body mists.
Mirae had chose to watch from the hill on purpose, far enough from the crowds that will definetly drain her, but still close enough to feel the entire atmosphere of the rite.
"Isn't it beautiful up here?" Mirae sighed as she played with her necklace, "You can see everyone from up here...everything looks so lively and, oh! Did you see those Tortuvinas dancing together, Ceci? They looked so pretty! Now I wonder if I can dance like that too,"
Mirae then shifts her gaze to the other side of the beach.
"That Candle Noodle right there seemed to be having the time of their life with their banjo," she giggled while pointing at the direction of the said noodle with her wings, "Also also! That one Ruptour is a bit too excited for the dance, don't you think? I do hope they didn't slice off anyone with that sword tail of theirs..."
Next to her, Ceci responds to Mirae's ramble with a happy chirp, as she casually pokes the rice cake in front of her or simply hides her body under her owner's soft mist and get herself comfortable.
Mirae keep on with her rambling. About the bonfire down there, the singing she heard, and the way some Faians shared snacks with one another, just like what she and Ceci did now.
But slowly, Mirae grew quiet as she looked at celebration below with melancholic gaze.
"Do you think we should go down too?" she asked, looking down at Ceci, "Like, actually joining with them, you know? It's a celebration after all! Everyone's at the bonfire and all that...perhaps I can also show off my singing skills too," she bit her lip, "And...who knows? Maybe it'll help me feel...less lonely..."
Ceci tilted her head. Blinked once, twice, and lets out an encouraging chirp.
"I know, I know, stop talking and more doing," Mirae sighs as she pats the Sphowlx's head, "I want to. I really do! I mean, what kind of Faian I am? Skipping the happy bonfire just to sit up in the hill with her rice cakes and pet. That sounds...very sad..."
Ceci squints.
"Uh...I mean...I'm the one that sounds sad!" Mirae adds quickly, as to not offend this little friend of her, "Not you! You're the best fluffball I can ask for! No, the greatest even! I would never trade you off for anything else,"
Ceci beamed and flaps her wings excitedly.
"Though," Mirae adds in a rather teasing tone, "I might do if someone had a nice set of jewelries...since Becca keeps messing with mine and I kinda need a new one..."
With that, Ceci lets out a series of terrified squeaks before flopping back to the rice cake box, (doing a fake) fainting.
"Silly! You know you're my bestest and very first friend, right? What kind of friend I am if I trade you off for some jewelries I can probably craft myself?" Mirae laughs as she took one rice cake next to her still-fake-fainting pet.
Ceci simply rise up from her act and flew towards Mirae's head to poke on them, giving her a "lesson".
Mirae giggles at Ceci's attempt of vengeance, "You're too cute sometimes, you know that?"
Ceci only responded with a small huff before flopping down on the soft pink mist.
"Jokes aside," Mirae adds as she stroke the mat under her with her wings, "I suppose I was more afraid on how everyone sees me,"
Ceci tilts her head in confusion.
"I mean...what if I messed up? What if I did get there and too shy to even say a hi? What if I turned out to be nervous that I stuttered when singing?" she threw her wings into the air dramatically and gasped, "Or worse! What if they don't want me at all because I looked a lot more like an awkward cotton candy than an elegant Tortuvina?!"
Mirae flops her head down to the mat, covers her head with her wings, and groaned.
"Why am I overthinking like this? Ugh. I should probably just...stay here and finish the rice cakes with you. At least you won't judge me," Mirae looked up to the Sphowlx on top of her head, "We can definetly start a new tradition for both of us, only during the rite—Up in The Hill of Eternal Snacks,"
Then, a sound of chatter in the air, not far from where they settle. Ceci's ear caught it first, followed by Mirae, who immediately raises her heads to the sound.
"Did you hear that?" Mirae asked.
Ceci chirped in response.
Then, Mirae grabbed her satchel and flew towards the sound, mist trailing behind her like some foggy ribbon. Ceci, too, floated next to her.
After floating here and there, passing a few trees, they reached a tall coconut tree, where a two Faians are...struggling.
At the base of the tree, one blue Candle Noodle with fluffy wax mane as white as marshmallow stood upright, balancing one light teal Lumendra on her head. The Lumendra's lanterns was most definetly trying to knock down the stubborn coconuts.
"Just a little bit...wait, no! Laluna, you wiggle too much!"
"I'm not wiggling, Irida! You're just too small!"
"I am in the average size of Lumendras! We're meant to be small!"
Mirae blinked at the sight and went just a little bit forward for the two to see her presence, "Uh...hello! I couldn't help but to accidently overheard the two of you but, if it's not too much...can I offer some help?"
The Lumendra beamed, her lantern lures flickered, "Why, of course! That'd be so nice of you!" she jumped off from the Candle Noodle's head and went to the soft sand, "We've been trying to get these coconuts for refreshments, but clearly, I'm too short and my friend's wax mane right here is a bit too slippery,"
"That's just rude," the Candle Noodle huffed.
The Lumendra squinted at her friend, "You started it when you called me that I'm too small!"
"But you are! I can't control how my wax would work!"
"Well, so does my height!"
Mirae giggles at the sight of this silly but friendly fight in front of her, until she felt Ceci tugging at her wing with her tiny beak. She pets the Sphowlx's head and turned to the Faians before her.
"I'll get the coconuts then! Meanwhile, you guys can, well, continue with the bickering,"
And with that, Mirae soared up to the tree and grab all the coconuts with ease and glided back down. Then, she gently placed those coconuts on the ground.
"Awesome! Thank you so much for the help!" the Lumendra cheered, "I suppose what we really need is some wings after all. And not some stubby paws or slippery head," she adds, giving a side-eye to the Candle Noodle.
"Oh, hush," the Candle Noodle pats her friend before stepped forward and took one coconut, "We should stop arguing and start thanking to our helper here,"
The Lumendra rolls her beaded eyes, clearly unamused.
"The name's Laluna, by the way!" the Candle Noodle said as she took one coconut, "And this is Irida," she adds, gesturing to the Lumendra who is now waving her tiny feet.
Mirae flaps her front wings, "It's nice to meet you two! I'm Mirae and this little Sphowlx of mine is Ceci!"
Ceci lets out a happy chirp.
Then, Laluna began to crack the coconuts open. All five of them.
"Wait," Mirae tilted her head, "Why all of them?"
"Just consider it as a coconut party!" Irida giggles as Laluna hand one coconut to her and Mirae.
"Or...you can take it as our way of saying thanks," Laluna adds, "It'd be rude if we didn't share you any, after you helped us so much already. Besides, I do need an excuse to try them out,"
Irida gives a heavy nods in agreement, "Yep! I'm getting thirsty from the climbing anyway," she said as she took a sip from the shell, "Try it on, Mirae! I'm pretty sure you're thirsty too!"
Mirae looked down at the coconut she held, then at Ceci that squeaks happily and already dove her head into the sweet water. And with no hestitation, she drank off the coconut water.
"Oh, wow...this is indeed refreshing!" Mirae brightened, "I think I have just the perfect snack to accompany this sweet drink,"
Laluna and Irida peeked curiously as Mirae took out small paper bags from her satchel. All filled with her signature rice cakes, incase of emergency, as what happens now.
"Please help yourself out!" she said as she hands the paper bags to her new friends, "I made this myself. But since I've never shared my cakes with anyone else, well, it might taste a bit...off,"
Laluna took one rice cake from the paper bag, observe it a little, then threw it into her mouth. Irida, too, did the same thing.
And soon, the sweetness filled their mouth, leaving a moment of silence, until Laluna opens her mouth.
"I have to say, Mirae. This is just..."
"Absolute perfection!" Irida interrupted, as she swings her lantern lures in satisfaction, "Aside from how chewy this is, I just like how you decorate them with tiny flower petals! I think I'm gonna need more than just one bag of them,"
Mirae giggles, happy for the compliment.
The three talked for a while, under the coconut tree. Mirae's mist swirled gently around her as she relaxed, laughter bubbled from her more freely now.
As they nibble the rice cakes and sipped the sweet coconut water, Laluna asks, "So...what brings you here? I don't think I saw you at the bonfire earlier,"
Mirae paused and sighs, "I prefer watching from the distance, I guess. Besides, I don't really know anyone down there and I just get so nervous when it comes to big groups,"
Laluna looked at Irida, then back to Mirae, "Well...do you mind if we joined in with you?"
Mirae blinked, "Y-You want to?"
"Why, yes!" Irida beamed, "You helped us, gave us treats, and your Sphowlx is very squishable!"
Ceci puffed up and flap her wings proudly.
Laluna nodded, "Besides, I can agree that big groups can be a bit overwhelming sometimes. Being up hill is way more peaceful,"
Mirae beamed at the words, "Gosh, I'd be happy if you guys can join me!"
Laluna grinned and stood up, "Great! I’ll go ahead and grab mine and Irida's stuff from the beach, be right back in a bit!"
Then, she went off and headed back down the hill. While Laluna was gone, Irida asked about Mirae’s lantern design, her rice cake's (possibly) secret recipe, or if her cloud mists are edible too.
Soon enough, Laluna returned, with a satchel tied on her body, "Alright, I’ve the stuff! Lead the way, Mirae!"
Ceci immediately floats towards Mirae's head and chirps, as if giving a command. With that, Mirae took them to where she settles earlier.
Moments after, they arrived in the right place, just where they can see the beach from above. And of course, Mirae's picnic mat and essentials are still there too.
The three (and Ceci) get started to work to decorate the place. Extra blanket and small cushions from Laluna, tiny lanterns from Irida, and especially, snacks from Mirae.
Ceci simply gives emotional support in a form of chirps and squeaks.
And finally, everything is done and dusted. They settled into a companionable chatter, with snacks and stories between them. Ceci eventually curled into Mirae's mist again, letting out a very satisfied squeak.
Mirae leaned back, resting her wings behind her. Irida was admiring the lanterns, whispering about the colors. Laluna was humming quietly.
"Thank you," Mirae said quietly, "For sitting here with me. I didn't expect much for today, but I really appreciate the company,"
Laluna smiles, "I suppose we should thank the coconuts and your rice cakes for reuniting me and Irida with you,"
Mirae and Irida laughed in approval.
And from the top of that quiet hill, where mist and lanterns glowed side by side, Mirae knew that her wish had finally come true
