A Lantern For Two

The sun hung low, casting a golden warmth over Lylluna Reef's sands, where the scent of seafoam and palm leaves mingled in the air. The Rite of The Reef was nearing its peak, as many Faians prepared their lanterns, along with the laughter and conversations trailing behind the ocean breeze.

Somewhere, far away from the chattering crowds and nestled on a flower-stitched picnic mat, Mirae. And her ever tiny pet, Ceci.

Mirae fluttered her wings in amusement, the soft mists of her body  stirred as she glued the very final bead on her lantern, then pulled with a very satisfied squeal,

"And...there you go! I hereby present: Mirae's Very Own Handmade Lantern! All crafted with love and sparkles!" she announced proudly while tossing a handful of glitter into the air for some...dramatic background effect.

Her lantern itself glows gently in front of her. All made from layared pastel-ish colored papers adorned with strings of fine threaded beads. Inside, Mirae had put a faintly glowing flora she found earlier for the last touch.

As she admired her work, she turned her head to the side.

"How's it going for you, Ceci? Adding some glitters yet?"

Meanwhile, Ceci stood on top of a paper with a small colored pencil on her beak. She made an determined glare on her paper, where a violet circle was drawn.

Mirae squinted at the paper. The circle was indeed poorly drawn, until Ceci began to add some more spikes and stars around it.

Ceci chirps, Mirae glanced back to Ceci then to her pet's artwork on the paper.

"Umm...Ceci..." she starts gently, as she's trying very carefully not to offend her, "Would you like some teeny tiny help? I think your, well, 'sun' could use some...refining sparkles?"

Ceci doesn't seem to be amused by the idea, as she chirped aggresively. A kind of high-pitched squeak that screams: 'ABSOLUTELY NOT! I GOT THIS AND I SHALL FINISH THIS MASTERPIECE!'

Mirae backed off, raising her wings in defeat, "Alright alright! Sheesh...no need to be so mad like that. I was just trying to help,"

Ceci lets out another upset squeak in response and began to add some more scribbles on her drawing.

Mirae simply choses to settled down under the tree, took out her rice cake supply, and began to nibble them as she watched her pet in adoration and amusement.

Ceci simply continues her lantern-making saga, constantly scribbles and adding a small amount glitters on top of her drawing. And at one point, she accidently stepped on the said glitter and letting out a dramatic squeak that made Mirae couldn't help but snort.

An hour passed like a wind. Many Faians had already bustling around the beach as the sky slowly turns dark. And Mirae? Still sprawled in front to Ceci, casually leaves a commentary to accompany her pet's determination.

"And here! You can see the ever hardworking but elusive Ceci! She's now entering the third stage of the Great Lantern Making Crisis...will she survive with this ordeal or simply give up? We shall find out about it...now,"

With that, Ceci slumped forward with a little fwup, uncaring of her beak that is now planted into the paper and most definetly made a small hole with it. A muffled and defeated chirp came from her, still face-planted on the paper.

Mirae flew gently towards Ceci, nudging to the Sphowlx, "Need help now, miss fluffball?"

Another muffled chirp. Which, now sounds like a very mournful one. She then pulled her head up and flew towards Mirae, before burrying herself in the comfort of Mirae's body mist like a defeated warrior.

Mirae chuckled, "Thought so too," she then reached for a new paper along with a jar of beads and glitters, "It's okay, I'll help you out! We'll make one Ceci-sized lantern just for you,"

Ceci perked up a little and finally lift up her head.

Mirae glance over the sky, now just a little darker than before, "And we better make it quick! Because the rite won't wait for us,"

Thus, began the last-minute lantern crafting. Mirae drew a simple sun and flowers on the paper, before folding it with her wings.

Ceci, determined to keep, at least some artistic input, fluttered away from the comfiness and started to drag some decorations with a serious chirp. Some glitter hearts in here, a tiny shell for there, even a string of beads she accidently got tangled in before Mirae rescue her from.

Not long after, Ceci's lantern was done. A tiny, Sphowlx-size lantern, coated with random sparkles and some strings.

Still, Ceci chirps excitedly. Extremely happy with the result.

The sky had turned navy blue by then, stars and silver clouds scattering and creating a breathtaking view. Many Faians had already gathered around by the beach, carrying each of their lanterns.

"Ah!" Mirae perked, "It's time!"

Mirae wastes no time as she tucked her crafting equipments in her backpack, give Ceci a small bite of rice cake, and scooped her tiny pet on her head.

"Off we go now! We can't miss the most important part after all!"

Then, she took a graceful but quick glide towards the shore, holding the lanterns with her wings. They shortly joined in with the crowd, with Ceci flew away from Mirae and took her very own tiny lantern.

Then, the crowd fell in silence, as the first lantern floats gently by the water.

Many lanterns followed after, released with whispered wishes. Each one of them slips into the waves and dance along the surface.

Mirae took a deep breath and glanced down at Ceci, "Ready?"

Ceci let out a confident chirp.

Together, they released their lanterns. Mirae watched as hers drifted away smoothly. Ceci's lantern, on the other hand, spun once, almost drowned, but finally righted itself.

The water is now filled with glows of the lanterns. Murmurs of awe, joy, and wistful chatter filled the air.

Mirae sighs in content and looked up at Ceci, who was now sitting comfortably on her head. Still gazing over the horizon.

"What did you wish for, Ceci?" she asked softly.

Ceci let out a chirp. A soft and sleepy one.

Mirae giggled, "That's a good one, not gonna lie,"

She smiled and turned her gaze towards the ocean, watching the lanterns drifted away.

"I really hope I can meet a new friend. Or maybe a few,"

The ocean didn't speak, but glows as if it heard her wish.

And in that moment, Mirae felt something warm in her chest, like a promise being made.
